Every now and then, I get a burst of inspiration to be that person—the one who downs health shots in the morning instead of, well, coffee or tea. This time, the motivation came in the form of a care package from my sister-in-law, who gifted me some fresh organic turmeric. And when life gives you turmeric, you make turmeric shots!

Now, while our high altitude farm ( @meenabaghfarms ) is great for apples, stone fruits, and berries, growing tropical fruits and veggies like turmeric, ginger, and citrus is a dream for another altitude. So, off to the market I went, picking up the rest of the ingredients with the enthusiasm of someone who thinks they’ll start a daily wellness routine.

Why Take Ginger Turmeric Shots?

Because they make you feel like a wellness influencer for at least five seconds before your face scrunches up from the spice. Jokes aside, these little golden shots are packed with anti-inflammatory and immune-boosting goodness. Perfect for those of us who alternate between mountain air and city pollution.

A Quick Disclaimer

Before you start knocking these back daily, remember—just because something is good for some people doesn’t mean it’s good for everyone. Test and see if your body likes this, and don’t blindly follow every health trend you see on the internet (including this one). Listen to your body, not just Instagram!

The Recipe

Here’s what you’ll need:

• 2 oranges

• 2 lemons

• Fresh ginger (start with 50g, but adjust if you like to live dangerously)

• Fresh turmeric (thanks, sis-in-law!) or ½ tsp ground turmeric

• 1/8 tsp black pepper (helps your body absorb all that turmeric goodness)

• 2 cups water OR coconut water if blending (skip if juicing)

• Optional: 1-2 tbsp sweetener of choice (because balance)

How to Make It

Juicer people, you have it easy—just toss everything in and let your machine do the work. If you’re using a blender (like me, because who owns a fancy juicer?), blend everything and then strain it through a sieve or cheesecloth. Pour into tiny glasses, take a deep breath, and down it like a champ.

Substitutions & Customizations

Not everyone’s body reacts the same way to health shots, so here are a few tweaks to make this drink work best for you:

• For Lower Acidity (GERD-friendly version): Dilute the shot with extra water or coconut water to make it gentler on the stomach. Also, try having it after meals instead of on an empty stomach.

• For Lower Sugar: Swap the oranges for amla (Indian gooseberry). It has way more Vitamin C but won’t spike blood sugar the same way. It’s a bit tart, but hey, that’s what sweeteners are for!

• For Extra Blood Sugar Support: Add a pinch of cinnamon—it not only enhances the flavor but also helps with blood sugar regulation.

• For a Stronger Kick: Love spice? Toss in an extra pinch of black pepper or even a dash of cayenne for a metabolism boost.

• For a Milder Taste: If the heat of ginger is too much, start with a smaller amount and gradually increase as your taste buds (and tolerance) adjust.

Feel free to experiment and see what suits your body best!

But Wait… What About the Pulp?

Now, if you hate food waste as much as I do, don’t toss that spicy, citrusy pulp just yet! Turn it into a zingy side dip instead:

• Mix the leftover pulp with a spoonful of yogurt or hung curd for a cooling contrast.

• Add a pinch of salt and some finely chopped green chilies if you want an extra kick.

• Pair it with parathas, crackers, or even spread it on toast for a funky, immune-boosting condiment.

Trust me, it’s like a tropical achaar with attitude.

The Verdict

Did it taste great? It definitely is not a beverage but mine doesn’t feel too bad either- maybe a little tasty too. Did I feel invincible? Absolutely. It’s the kind of thing that wakes you up faster than a cold winter morning in the upper altitudes of Himachal. Plus, knowing it’s filled with nature’s best remedies makes it easier to bear the ginger turmeric punch.
